ghost ですが、原義は「恐怖、驚愕」であったようです。なお、ghostに相当するドイツ語は Geist という男性名詞ですが、「霊魂」という意味は一般化しなかったようです。つまり英語と同族言語のドイツ語では「心、精神」という意味で使われています。例えば、Der Geist ist willing; aber das Fleisch ist schwach.「心はその気でいるが、肉体は弱い」というように使われています。

次のウィクリフの聖書からの例では、「初期訳」（Earlier Version）では spirit が、「後期訳」（Later Version）では goost が使われ、sente out the spirit および ӡaf vp the goost で「息を引き取る、死ぬ」を意味しています。つまり、「息を引き取る」とは「生命の根源が消滅する」ということになりましょう。

以上の引用で明らかなように、ghost は14世紀後半から「亡霊」の意味で使われるようになり、16世紀には一般化していたと考えられます。ただし、英訳聖書では「聖霊」の意味で Holy Ghost が多用され、Holy Spirit が現れるのは現代の英訳聖書になってからです。
