現代英語の dove の起源は OE *dufe（* は推定の語）と考えられていますが、古英語では地名以外では使われていません。中英語期にはあらゆるハト科 （Columbidae 〈ラテン語でハト（科）の意〉。ae は本来は一つの合字）の鳥の総称として dove が使われていたようです。

この dove と同じ意味で pigeon（OF pijon, pyjon〈= young dove〉）が見られますが、pigeon はラテン語の pipo「ピーピー鳴く」という擬音語から生じた語です。英語に流入してきたのは14世紀後半で、特に小鳩（a young dove）の意味で用いられました。
