語根も不詳で原義についても定説はありませんが、『オックスフォード英語辞典』によりますと、インド・ヨーロピアン祖語（Indo-European）の *men- に由来すると言われています。その意味も「考える（to think）」または「息をする（to breathe）」とされています。
より詳しい解説を読むこれまで「ひと」に関する語について、その意味変化をみてきましたが、この「ひと」を表す英語の man は、もともとどのような意味だったのでしょうか。語根も不詳で原義についても定説はありませんが、『オックスフォード英語辞典』によりますと、インド・ヨーロピアン祖語（Indo-European）の *men- に由来すると言われています。その意味も「考える（to think）」または「息をする（to breathe）」とされています。これはラテン語の mensにも関連する語であります。この mens は「精神」という意味ですから、ここから英語の mental 「知的な、知能の」が生じています。従って、「ひと」は息をしているだけではなく考えていないと「ひと」とは認められないことになります。
